“Those who flow as life flows, know they need no other force” ~ Lao Tzu

Oriental Yoga is a fusion of traditional Indian Hatha yoga with Chinese medicine and Taoist cosmology. The aim of applying this knowledge is, like all yoga’s and spiritual paths, is to help the practitioner align with the natural cosmic forces of the universe. When one aligns with these natural forces the path becomes more harmonious, more easeful and more joyful, for these are the innate qualities of the universal Way.

This book explores the 5 element system and provides insight into all the associated organs and meridians. Also detailed are a variety of practices and yoga asanas to help the practitioner align with each of the seasons. This book is not just about explaining a variety of yoga postures, it explores a complete system of yoga.

In this book you will learn
- About the 5 elements and how to adjust to them to bring more balance to ones life
- Signs and symptoms of the Elements in balance
- Signs and symptoms of the Elements out of balance
- Practical tips to correct any imbalances
- The 14 primary meridians
- Food and Oriental diet therapy
- Muscles associated with the organs and meridians
- Yoga postures that focus on the each of the organs and meridians
- Seasonal meditation practices

The Complete Book of Oriental Yoga Hatha and Taoist Yoga for the Seasons edition by Michael Hetherington Religion Spirituality eBooks

This author does a wonderful job of making the basic concepts of Oriental Yoga easy to understand. My health has been improved by considering and applying some oriental yoga principles, in particular his helpful explanation about diet and yoga ( from oriental perspective ) was most helpful. I would like to thank the author for the wonderful contribution this book represents to the entire community of yoga and for health. Sincerest thanks. This book also does a nice job of explaining some basic principles of acupuncture, one more reason I recommend it as a worthy read.

The Complete Book of Oriental Yoga Hatha and Taoist Yoga for the Seasons edition by Michael Hetherington Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

The Complete Book of Oriental Yoga considers the theoretical and philosophical components of “Oriental Yoga” and then moves into a more practical approach. The author includes the elements and seasons, important concepts and manifestations of mother nature. I found this extremely relevant and useful to include within a yogic practice.

The author sees Oriental Yoga as a system that considers more than just asanas, but also diet and lifestyle, and he does so in an explanatory and instructional way. The use of figures as a visual tool to assist in understanding the sometimes complex philosophies is excellent. I found this book to clearly explain a number of fuzzy ideas. Its focus on interconnected thoughts and practices across different disciplines is thought provoking, and the author provides guidance on how to integrate this into daily /seasonal practice.

I would recommend this book to both those who wish to learn, and those who wish to expand their knowledge and practice, about yoga, better health and balance, and living more simply, with the elements and seasons, and in equilibrium.
One of the best things about Michael Hetherington's book is it successfully combines many different modalities & therapies into one book.

I have seen others attempt this unsuccessfully before - they failed mainly because they made no effort is made to connect the differences between the modalities.

However, because Michael is already a practitioner of Acupuncture, Yoga, Shiatsu, and Meditation, he is able to show a connection between these practices. For example, he connects the meridians to actual muscles in the body, yoga poses, food (but alas no recipes), herbs, life style choices and meditation practices.

Michael's integration of therapies allows anyone who practices in one of these fields to have access to the other modalities contained in the book.

The book also contains more than just different therapies - it introduces a way (Tao) of living in harmony with the seasons and natural flow of life. This is done in a very elementary way, and as a practitioner myself, I would of liked a bit more in depth Taoism in the book, but at least it is there, even if it is in a very basic form.

For those already doing Yoga, this will expand your knowledge giving you even more tools to use in your own life or as a teacher of yoga.

For those already doing some type of Oriental Medicine, this book will introduce you to ways where you can feel the meridians through yoga stretches and meditations. (This is sadly lacking in modern day Acupuncture studies - feeling the meridians move and stretch in your own body used to be an integral part of the learning process).

I recommend this as both a text book for beginners in Oriental Medicine (Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Shiatsu, Tui Na) and Yoga, and as a great resource book for professional practitioners and teachers in their specialised fields.

Any book that combines different ideas usually makes the sacrifice on not going into depth in any one area. The introduction to lot of ideas in Michael's book are very good but basic, and the Asanas listed are a fantastic introduction, but only really scratch the surface of the number of meridian stretches available for each element.

Whereas I do not think Michael can get away with calling it the Complete Book of Oriental Yoga, I do think his book is a great resource to have in your personal library. I will be recommending it to my friends and to people who teach Shiatsu, Acupuncture, and Yoga at colleges.
good read
very helpful
I ordered both the hard copy and the ebook so that it would be handy as a reference when needed. It more than met my needs. Most of Michael Heatherington's books are very informative self help books. I have quite a a few of them.
