For astronaut David Dixon, sneaking aboard a Russian space station and stealing a nuclear bomb was the easy part – now he has to survive re-entry on an untested inflatable heat shield and then deal with the aftermath of being the most wanted man on Earth.

When a clandestine intelligence agency offers David the chance to return to space and probably not get killed – he finds himself in a world of intrigue when a secret mission takes an unexpected turn as he goes undercover on an orbiting science platform in order to track down the spymaster known as Silverback.

Orbital is a fast-paced blend of space action and mystery thriller set in the fast-emerging aerospace age.

Orbital Station Breaker Book 2 edition by Andrew Mayne Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first book, Station Breaker, which was a well-written and fast-faced astronaut adventure. My only complaint is it lacked an ending. Literally left our hero hanging in space without a spaceship. I had to buy this book just to learn the ending to the last one, so that's 10 points against the author already. That desperate to sell a sequel? And this sequel lacks the high-octane thrills of the first novel. Even how the main character gets back to Earth lacked the detail and drama I was anticipating. The main story in Orbital is about sending an astronaut to a space station to solve a crime. He's not a detective, not a criminal investigator, but an astronaut. Yet solve it he does, of course. I enjoyed a miraculous escape he makes about halfway through, but this story is far less gripping than the first book. It was like a weak made -for-TV sci-fi movie, where everything conveniently gets wrapped up at the end.

Orbital Station Breaker Book 2 edition by Andrew Mayne Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Another great read from a man of many amazing talents! Mr. Mayne' s sci fi adventures extend beyond the genre to encompass mystery, comedy, and entertaining reading.
His 'hero' in this series, an 'everyman' doing his best, in bad, but exciting situations, will hold your attention both to him and the plot of the books. A great buy and fun read that I'm happy I purchased. Looking forward to the next 'Dixon' adventure.

I just finished my fifth book by Andrew Mayne. A couple of weeks ago he was a new discovery recommended to me by . Since then he's been the explosive focus of my genre book reading in what is tantamount to a "binge". I'd recommend all of his books Harley to anyone looking for solidly entertaining recreational reading
This book picks up right where Station Breaker left off. It was so engrossing and fast paced that I read it through in 1 day. It has fast action, reality base science, and I actually laughed out load several times. I can't wait for a third book in this series, but I guess the next Jessica Blackwood book will have to hold me over until then.
Orbital picks up right where Station Breaker ended. This book captures you right away and you will not want to put it down. David Dixon is back in space and, of course, in danger. It's up to David to discover who is on his side and who is against him. He again puts his life on the line for the greater good. There really is something for everyone in this book. Action. Adventure. Space. Spies. Mystery. A space suit made of duct tape. (It's awesome!) Even a little romance. I highly recommend Orbital. I promise you will not be disappointed. I'm already excited and hopeful for a third installment!
This is my third Mayne novel. Andrew tells a good story. It increased my interest as the story went along. The character development was good and allowed me to feel connected to them.

There were 5-6 typos in the story which was distracting and it seemed there was too much swearing.

Andrew, thanks for using your writing talents to keep me interested in reading. I have been reading too much industry material lately and your fictional stories allowed me to enjoy reading for a change.
The sequel we all wanted is here. The adventure starts off right where book one left off (in fact reread the last chapter of book one again for some context). The impending global disaster has been adverted but the shadowy conspiracy that masterminded it is still out there....

A great continuation of the story that has the same single seating reading experience that Mayne is known for. Once you start you will not want to stop until its done. The twist and turns are fun as well as the near future world of private and public spacestation dotting the sky.

I look forward to the next one in this exciting series.
Orbital is a fine follow-up to Station Breaker. The style/setup is similar. First person narrative by a sort-of-average guy turned action hero. The story moves very fast, with slam-bang action. In Orbital, the protagonist is more of a typical action story hero, than the ordinary guy caught in a confusing and dangerous tumult, that he was in Station Breaker. There are more than a few twists and turns throughout the story. Now, if you really slow things down and look closely at the overall setup of the story and the logic and motivations, you can find several things that don't make a lot of sense and several deus ex machinas and macguffins. There's also little character development. The overall story arc and characters really exist only to support the action scenes and plot twists. This didn't bother me much, as I just went along for the ride. I was a bit surprised that a key plot point from both books, namely discovery of the identity of a mysterious Big Bad character, pretty much fizzled out near the end. In fact, the whole ending seemed quite rushed, with many loose ends quickly and conveniently tied up. If you can enjoy a thrill ride without looking behind the curtain, you should enjoy Orbital.
